Diabetes is classified as one of the diseases of civilization of the 21st century. Life Medical Center is a place where diabetes specialists offer their services in diagnosing and treating this disease. A diabetes specialist diagnoses and treats various types of diabetes. It is worth noting that the treatment of this condition is long-term and complex. The patient regularly visits a diabetologist, who analyzes his blood glucose measurements, adjusts the doses of insulin and other drugs, and works closely with the dietician. The diabetologist also provides the patient with knowledge about the use of the insulin pump and refers him to other specialists. Diabetes carries the risk of many complications, so sometimes visits to other doctors, such as an ophthalmologist, endocrinologist or cardiologist, are needed.

A visit to a diabetologist
And what next?

After a visit to a diabetologist, you should follow all the recommendations that have been presented to you. An important element in the treatment of diabetes is the regular intake of oral medications or insulin at appropriate doses and at specific intervals to maintain blood sugar control. This can be achieved by injecting yourself or by using an insulin pump – a small device that automatically releases the right amount of insulin. In addition, it is important to follow the diet rules agreed with a diabetologist and dietician and regular physical activity. Consultations and follow-up examinations are also necessary to measure the progress of treatment.

Remember, a visit to a diabetologist is for you

Your visit to the diabetologist is for you, not for the diabetologist, and it is important that you are honest during it and take specific treatment tips, advice on how to deal with different situations, and motivation to continue fighting for healthy blood sugar levels. You don’t have to pretend in front of your doctor – you can be honest and open about the difficulties you are facing and what you can’t cope with. If you feel like you’re overwhelmed by diabetes treatment and lack energy – say it out loud.

Many diabetics suffer from depression but do not admit it, which takes away their ability to get help. Depression with diabetes can lead to neglect of self-control. If your measurement results are unsatisfactory, do not underestimate it – together with your doctor, think about what could have happened that made you lose motivation. Remember that a diabetologist is not there to judge whether you are trying hard enough, but he is there to help you with any problem related to diabetes, including the emotional one.

Everything you need to know
about diabetology and CGM

What is CGM (Continuous Glucose Monitoring) and how is it different from traditional glucose measurement with a blood glucose meter?

CGM is a system that automatically measures glucose levels in the interstitial fluid around the clock, providing real-time data. Unlike a blood glucose meter, which measures blood glucose at any given time, CGM allows you to observe trends, identify fluctuations, and predict changes in glucose levels.

How does a CGM sensor work and where is it placed?

A CGM sensor is a small device that is inserted under the skin (usually on the abdomen or arm). The sensor measures the glucose level in the interstitial fluid and sends the data to a receiver (smartphone or dedicated device). Eversense requires the sensor to be implanted by a doctor, while FreeStyle Libre is self-applied.

What is an Eversense CGM sensor and how long does it last?

Eversense is a CGM system in which a sensor is implanted under the skin for up to 180 days (Eversense E3). It offers accurate and long-lasting glucose monitoring, as well as vibration alerts to warn you when glucose levels are too high or low.

What is the FreeStyle Libre system and what are its benefits?

FreeStyle Libre is a glucose monitoring system that consists of a sensor stuck on the arm and a reader (or a smartphone with an app). The advantage of FreeStyle Libre is non-invasive (it does not require calibration with finger) and ease of use.

How does the CGM sensor help in the daily life of a person with diabetes?

The CGM sensor helps people with diabetes to: better control their blood glucose levels, identify factors that affect glucose levels (e.g. meals, physical activity, stress), adjust insulin dose, avoid hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia, and improve quality of life.

What are the indications for the use of CGM? Who can benefit from continuous glucose monitoring in LIFE?

Indications for CGM include: type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes (especially in people using insulin), gestational diabetes, and difficulty controlling glycemia despite the use of traditional methods. At LIFE, we offer diabetes consultations and the selection of an appropriate CGM system, tailored to the individual needs of the patient.

Is CGM reimbursed? What is the availability of Eversense and FreeStyle Libre systems privately?

CGM systems are not fully reimbursed in Poland. At LIFE, we offer the opportunity to purchase and professionally support Eversense and FreeStyle Libre systems.

What are the costs associated with the use of CGM (sensor, applicator, reader)?

The costs associated with the use of CGM depend on the selected system and the period of use. Eversense has a higher initial cost (sensor implantation), but long-term use can be more cost-effective. FreeStyle Libre has a lower upfront cost, but requires more frequent sensor replacement. Detailed information on costs is available in LIFE.

How to make an appointment for a diabetes consultation at LIFE in order to select a CGM system?

You can make an appointment for a diabetes consultation at LIFE in order to select the CGM system by phone, through the patient portal available on our website or in person at the reception desk. Our specialists will help you choose the right system, tailored to your individual needs and preferences.
