About hematology
"
''Hematology is the art of understanding blood diseases and their impact on the health of the whole body.''
Haematology is a branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the blood and hematopoietic system. This specialization also includes research on the mechanisms of these diseases, their treatment and prevention of complications. Hematologists work with other professionals to provide comprehensive care, including transfusion therapy and bone marrow transplants.
An important part of a haematologist’s work is the interpretation of laboratory test results, such as blood counts, bone marrow biopsies or genetic tests. Depending on the results of these tests and clinical symptoms, the doctor selects the appropriate treatment, which may include pharmacotherapy, immunotherapy, chemotherapy and various surgical interventions.

Diagnostics
Lymph node ultrasound
Lymph node ultrasonography is a non-invasive imaging test that helps to assess their size, structure and the presence of possible pathological changes. It is particularly useful in the diagnosis of cancer, such as lymphomas, and in the assessment of inflammatory and infectious reactions.

Abdominal ultrasound
This examination allows for the assessment of the condition of internal organs, such as the liver, spleen or kidneys, which may be involved in disease processes related to the hematopoietic system. Abdominal ultrasound is often used to monitor spleen enlargement, which can be a symptom of various haematological diseases.
Chest X-ray
Chest radiography is a basic diagnostic test that allows you to assess the condition of the lungs and mediastinum. It can be helpful in detecting cancer metastases to the lungs, enlarged mediastinal lymph nodes, as well as other lesions that may accompany blood diseases.

Aspiration biopsy
Bone marrow
Aspiration biopsy involves taking a sample of bone marrow to assess its cell composition. It is a quick and minimally invasive test that provides valuable diagnostic information.
Types of aspiration biopsy:
- Myelogram aspiration biopsy – allows the structure of bone marrow cells to be assessed in microscopic examination, which is crucial in the diagnosis of anemia, leukemias and other blood diseases.
- Aspiration biopsy for immunophenotyping – allows for a detailed analysis of bone marrow cells using laboratory techniques, which is particularly useful in the diagnosis of hematopoietic system cancers.
Trepanobiopsy
Bone marrow
Trepanobiopsy is a more advanced test in which a bone fragment is taken along with the marrow. This makes it possible to accurately assess the structure of the bone marrow, which is important in diagnosing some diseases of the hematopoietic system, such as myelodysplastic syndromes or myelofibrosis.
This test allows for the assessment of both cells and the structure of the myeloid tissue, providing comprehensive diagnostic data.

FAQ
1. How much does a bone marrow biopsy cost?
At LIFE Medical Center, the first step is to consult with a haematologist to assess your eligibility for surgery. Your doctor will decide which diagnostic tests are necessary, depending on your symptoms and your diagnostic strategy.
Based on the price list from February 2025, the cost of procedures at LIFE Medical Center is:
1. BONE MARROW ASPIRATION BIOPSY
- myelogram (microscopic smear) – 900 PLN
- myelogram + immunophenotypic test – 3000 PLN
2. TREPANOBIOPSY (histopathological examination)
- always performed with microscopic evaluation of the bone marrow aspirate smear (myelogram) – from PLN 3500
3. ASPIRATION BIOPSY + TREPNOBIOPSY
- myelogram + immunophenotypic test + trepanobiopsy
2. How long does a bone marrow biopsy take?
A bone marrow biopsy typically takes 10 to 20 minutes, but the total length of stay in a medical facility may be longer.
3. What can come out of a bone marrow biopsy?
Bone marrow biopsy can show or exclude various abnormalities in the functioning of the bone marrow, m.in. bone marrow cancers (m.in. leukemias, multiple myeloma, some subtypes of lymphomas, myelofibrosis, myelodysplasia), aplastic anemia and other haematological disorders.
4. Are bone marrow biopsies expensive?
Based on the price list from February 2025, the cost of procedures at LIFE Medical Center is:
1. BONE MARROW ASPIRATION BIOPSY
- myelogram (microscopic smear) – 900 PLN
- myelogram + immunophenotypic test – 3000 PLN
2. TREPANOBIOPSY (histopathological examination)
- always performed with microscopic evaluation of the bone marrow aspirate smear (myelogram) – from PLN 3500
3. ASPIRATION BIOPSY + TREPNOBIOPSY
- myelogram + immunophenotypic test + trepanobiopsy
5. How much does it cost to have a biopsy done privately?
At LIFE Medical Center, the first step is to consult with a haematologist to assess your eligibility for surgery. Your doctor will decide which diagnostic tests are necessary, depending on your symptoms and your diagnostic strategy.
Based on the price list from February 2025, the cost of procedures at LIFE Medical Center is:

6. What instead of a bone marrow biopsy?
In some cases, other tests may be performed instead of a bone marrow biopsy, such as detailed blood tests, peripheral blood flow cytometry or imaging tests, but the final decision is made by a haematology specialist, depending on the planned diagnostic algorithm.
7. How many days does it take to get the result of the biopsy?
The waiting time for the biopsy result is usually from a few days to a few weeks, depending on the type of examination and the facility performing the analysis.
8. Is bone marrow collection painful?
Bone marrow collection can be painful, however, local anesthesia (similar to the anesthesia used in a dental office) is used to minimise discomfort. After the procedure, pain at the injection site may occur, a local hematoma (bruise).
9. What does a positive biopsy result mean?
A positive biopsy result means that abnormalities have been detected, e.g. cancer or other haematological diseases that require further diagnosis and treatment.
10. Can there be complications after a biopsy?
Complications such as pain, hematoma, infection at the injection site or, in rare cases, damage to bone structures or blood vessels may occur after a biopsy.
Each time before the planned bone marrow biopsy procedure, the doctor assesses the indications for the procedure, the risk of complications and recommends the necessary tests to exclude bleeding complications.
In addition, it verifies the medications taken by the patient that could increase the risk of postoperative complications.
